I’m lying flat out on my couch as comfortably as humanly possible eating a Double Whopper burger that’s half dripping on my chest and the other half on my face while sipping ice cold soda and reading an oversized Philip K. Dick science fiction novel and loving every second of it.
In my world ideal states of existence like this don’t last for long before being shattered by the harsh demands of reality. A single phone call manages to ruin my Sunday afternoon. It’s my Uncle Christopher and he needs to go grocery shopping. Uncle Christopher is 87 years old, as blind as Stevie Wonder and needs to be thus chauffeured around. Other than his sight he is as healthy and strong as an ox and likes to highlight his commands by prodding or hitting me with his walking stick. An absolute charming man as you can tell, so I have no choice but to wearily drag myself up from Sunday bliss and head towards Sunday anguish.
Putting on a cap and some shoes I dash out of the house and get over to his place which isn’t too far away from my own. I find Uncle Christopher waiting out front dressed in a grey tweed jacket, holding his trusty walking stick and decked with his oversized Clark Kent spectacles. He peers at me for about 5 minutes when I pull up beside him and only when I tell him it’s me does he nod and get into the car.
As soon as he gets in he thwacks me on my shoulder with his walking stick and orders me to take him to K-Mart. “Aye aye Ahab,” I respond.
The next thing he does is to turn my car stereo off. Then he pulls out an iPod from his tweed jacket along with what I recognize to be a KENSINGTON LIQUIDFM PLUS FM TRANSMITTER FOR MP3 PLAYERS, some pretty high tech gear for someone who was around during the Triassic period. I look at this old fossil beside me with a penchant for new age technology and indie funk music and I have to say he does have something going for him, some kind of old age style you might be inclined to say was cool. Pretty soon me and Uncle Christopher are humming along together, driving down a beachside road, windows down, winds in our faces blowing our (my) hair, and sun on our faces (and his bald head), and I seem to be loving every second of it.
