When it hits this time of the year, what I like to call the Doom of December, when frantic Christmas shopping ensues leaving me a financial cripple at every turn, this is when the teachings of Scrooge McDuck come into serious play. For those of you who ever caught the cartoon of the effusive billionaire duck you would have seen the giant building he had where he stored his mountains of money. Cliffs of paper bags and valleys of coins. Every single coin counted, no matter how much money he had he would never let one coin go astray.

Same philosophy, far smaller amounts in my case. To make it through the fervor of Christmas shopping alive you’ve got to make every cent count. Every last steel piece has got to take you that extra inch in that long lonely mile of Christmas shopping. And that’s why I bought the Coin Saver. A Bill Gates looking gypsy called Maurice LeBeau sold it to me for a few coins rather ironically. “Not a regular jar” he called it. “Perfect for penny pinching people” he said it was for. “Your own personal ATM that deals with coins” he advertised.

So being the savvy savant of commerce that I knew I was, I spent a little money to save a little money. Call me McDuck.

This was no regular coin saving jar, this was bottled up future tech. A jar that counted every single coin that you slide through its slot. A LCD display on the jar keeps tabs of every single coin that goes through it. And if you need to make a quick withdrawal simply key in the amount taken and the counter deducts the coins from the total. It plays a similar role to me that my mom used to when I was an adolescent begging for money. Every cent was counted.

There’s no better way than for someone who has metaphorical holes in his hands and his pockets when it comes to money. The next time I think buying a scuba set for my Aunt May is a good idea counting every coin that it’s going to cost to buy said set will make me think twice. It’s not that I want to be a tightwad it’s more the fact that I want to not spend needlessly on devices such as the “Thigh Blaster 2000”, most people do not appreciate these kinds of gifts for Christmas.
