Face first in the mud, eating dirt like it was an all you can eat buffet, with about seven guys, most of which are well over 200 pounds in size, on top of me, I realize two things, firstly: that I have never ever been good at footy and probably never will be, and secondly and perhaps far more importantly I think my back is broken.
Turns out I was half right, after a few scans and X-rays, followed by derision and ridicule by my closest friends for being found at the bottom of a eight man pile up, we find out I have a slipped disk and two fractured ribs. Which brings me to where I am right now, propped up in bed telling you this story over my phone. Not an ordinary phone of any kind, but a Philips Skype/Landline Cordless Phone Twin Handset, which is like the Ferrari of the phone world. You can switch between making local calls and international cheap Skype calls as easy as switching lanes in an Asian country. I am feeling ridiculous good, I don’t know if this is the morphine talking or the straight up comfort I am enjoying talking to you on the phone right now.
It’s probably a bit of both; just before I called you all I was doing was playing the polyphonic ring tones of the phone and dancing in bed. This thing has ten different melodies. For someone juiced up on morphine to kill the pain I am really tripping balls right now over this phone!
I know what you’re thinking. Sure I do. Not that I read minds or anything. Nothing of the sort. I don’t have ESPN contrary to what many people believe. You’re thinking why did I call you. You’re thinking why did someone like me call someone like you. I mean you hardly speak English. What is that you’re saying, Spanish right, Habla Es pan yol? I don’t know why I called you man. I was just lying here in bed next to a Philips Skype phone and I thought, hey, wouldn’t it be cool to call Spain! So I did, and you answered and we been talking this past hour, hour and a half and I think on some level we really have bonded.
I’ll tell you one thing though; I am done with any contact sports. Forget about it. No, I think what you guys have there is way safer, fighting bulls. I mean think about it, you have that, what do you call it, that cloth that you hold and the bull charges and swish, the bull hits nothing but air. Over here you are running for your life and you have 4 or 5 guys chasing after you, most of these guys have less brains than a bull and no swish man, they just land on you and the next thing you find yourself marooned in bed talking to a Spanish Conquistador of all people!
What? No, I didn’t mean to offend, I’m just saying you know, it’s nice to talk to someone who isn’t from around here, maybe your outside perspective helps you understand better you know. Outside looking in and all that. You really should get yourself one of these phones. Call your vatos all over the world and all you know what I am saying. I realize you probably don’t know what I am saying but still, keep it in mind.
Ok man, I’m off, gonna call Guatemala; see if I can speak to someone there. Seriously compadre, get one of these phones!
